Perl by Example

February 6th, 2010 by CGI & PHP.com

Product Description
“I picked up a copy of JavaScript by Example over the weekend and wanted to thank you for putting out a book that makes JavaScript easy to understand. I’ve been a developer for several years now and JS has always been the “monster under the bed,” so to speak. Your book has answered a lot of questions I’ve had about the inner workings of JS but was afraid to ask. Now all I need is a book that covers Ajax and Coldfusion. Thanks again for putting together a… More >>

I don't mind the references to awk & sed.
    2nd edition's editing was spotty.

Clealy written, and in terms I believe are easily understood by programmers.

    Also, wonderful price! (under $2.00)

I use this book every day. It never fails me. It's written with UNIX in mind, but most of the examples still apply if you're doing NT. NT users will probably need an additional book on NT modules, but modules are not what this book claims to cover. My book on NT modules is as big a this book. This book has what I think are 3 of the most important parts of a programming book: good examples, a good index, and a good TOC.

    Nice work Ellie!

The blurb on the cover of the 3rd edition said: "Full cross-platform coverage… including Windows and Macintosh." If you think you will not need Unix knowledge, take a look at this example from page 52:

The $_ Scalar Variable: "… When used as a pattern space for searches, it behaves like sed. When used to hold the current line, it is like the $0 variable in awk."

If this is clear to you, buy the book.

This book is a superb resource for new and intermediate users. Every point is presented with sample input, sample code, the output, and a detailed explanation. Also, the paper is sturdy
the binding is good, and the type size is readable. I strongly recommend this book.
